Ob-Gyn faculty earns Girls Scouts distinction

Dr. Mildred Ridgway, assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology, has been named a Woman of Distinction by Girl Scouts of Greater Mississippi.

Ridgway was among seven honorees from across the state lauded Sept. 21 for their community service and for being strong, positive role models for today’s girls. Ceremonies recognizing the women focused on the power of the “GIRL” – a “go-getter,” “innovator,” “risk taker” and “leader.”

Money raised at the Women of Distinction event will enable more girls to take part in Girl Scouts and will go toward programming and leadership training for girls in the local Girl Scouts council.
 

Women’s Foundation honors vice chancellor

Dr. LouAnn Woodward, vice chancellor for health affairs and dean of the School of Medicine, has been recognized as a Woman of Vision by the Women’s Foundation of Mississippi.

Woodward is among four women honored by the foundation, the only grant-making and advocacy organization in the state devoted to funding programs that improve the lives of women and girls statewide. The foundation is committed to helping women and girls transcend social and economic barriers.

Woodward and the other three honorees will take part in a celebration Oct. 2 at the Mississippi Museum of Art.

MBJ names four UMMC staff health care 'heroes'

Four members of the UMMC staff have been recognized as "Health Care Heroes" by the Mississippi Business Journal.

Those lauded include Dr. Richard Summers, professor of emergency medicine and associate vice chancellor for research; Dr. Alan Jones, professor and chair of emergency medicine; Dr. David Felton, professor of dentistry and dean of the School of Dentistry; and Blake Ward, a C.R.N.A. in the Department of Anesthesiology.

The publication each year recognizes men and women in the health care industry whose contributions have increased the well-being of the community. Summers, Jones and Felton were lauded in the physician category and Ward in the nursing category.

The physician category honors doctors who work to discover new medicine or practices that can save lives or improve the quality of life for a large number of people. Those chosen in the nursing category are considered exemplary by patients and doctors, and provide a model of professionalism to their peers.
